Richard Verschoor impresses during GP3 debut at Spa

In front of tens of thousands Dutch race fans 17 year old Dutch driver Richard Verschoor made an impressive debut in the GP3 series at Spa Francorchamps. He had to start the first race on saturday from the pit lane which made it almost impossible to fight for top positions. During the second race, the Sprint race on Sunday, he fought back from seventeenth place to seventh overall with several very impressive overtaking manoeuvres. Verschoor was very satisfied with the improvements he showed during the whole weekend.

After half a season in Formula Renault with Josef Kaufmann Racing Verschoor returned to MP Motorsport, his old team. In 2016 Verschoor won two Formula 4 Championships together with MP Motorsport and for the rest of 2018 he will drive in the GP3 car of Dorian Boccolacci who switched to Formula 2.

During free practice and qualification Verschoor finished 15th overall which was a very encouraging result especially because it was the first time he drove in the GP3 car. But during the qualification Verschoor missed the weighbridge and was removed from the qualifying results. Because of that he had to start from the pit lane for the first race.

“I was pretty happy with my result of the free practice and the qualification. The difference between Formula Renault and GP3 is immense so finishing in 15th place is ok. But during qualifying I made a stupid mistake and missed the weighbridge. I should have payed more attention. Because of my own mistake I had to start from the pit lane and on a cold track that’s the worst way to start the race. You just want to have the possibility to warm your tires before the race. I just used the first race to become familiar with the car.

And that strategy seemed to work great for Richard Verschoor. He started the Sprint race on Sunday from 17th place and drove an incredible race, overtook several drivers, finished 7th overall and scored two GP3 points at his debut.
“I was in my old rhythm again and really enjoyed this race. And that was a long time ago. I am very happy with this weekend and my improvements. The Dalara GP3 car is very different from the Tatuus Formula Renault. We use other tires and twice the power compared to the Formula Renault. And we use DRS, so pretty much everything is different. A GP3 car has to be driven more smoothly and that really suits me.”

Verschoor doesn’t have much time to relax. Upcoming weekend the next GP3 race is at Monza and Verschoor can’t wait to start. “I can’t wait to drive on Monza. It is a very fast circuit with only six corners so everybody can drive fast over there. The difference can be found in small setup changes so we have to pay a lot of attention to the data during free practise.”
