During the opening weekend of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 series KNAF Talent First driver Richard Verschoor seemed to have finished at fifth place. After the finish of the race the young talented driver got disappointed by a penalty of five seconds which threw him back to the eight position. Verschoor didn’t have much luck during the first race of the weekend either. After a small accident in the first lap he had to park his car with damage and end his race.
“In the second race the pace was fine – that’s the positive we have to take from this weekend,” said Richard Verschoor.

The ten round – and twenty race – counting Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Championship opened this weekend at Circuit Paul Ricard in France. This year 27 young talented drivers will fight for the championship which make this years championship very exciting. After debuting in the championship last year Richard Verschoor set his goals on the championship in 2018. During the multiple test before the start of the season the 17 year old driver of team Josef Kaufmann finished in the top three more than once so he started the first race in France full of confidence.

After a very wet free practice on the circuit in the southern of France the circuit dried up completely for the qualification. In both the first and the second qualification session Verschoor finished fifth in his group which made him start from ninth position in both races. The first race in the saturday afternoon was very short for Verschoor. After the start he was able to gain a couple of positions but in one of the first corners he was hit by one of the other competitors which damaged the frontwing of his car. That incident ended his first race of the season.
“Someone went for a gap which wasn’t there, I was there. That ended my race before it was properly started,” said Verschoor.

Verschoor could show his pace during the second race. Started from position eight Verschoor was able to overtake two other competitors and he kept sixth position until a long safetycar period. After the restart of the race he managed to overtake another driver with a great overtake maneuver and he passed the finish line in fifth position.

“In the first lap me and a couple of other drivers were close together. During the fight for positions I went off track for a short moment. I could have given back one position but that have cost me three positions. The stewards gave me a penalty for that which is sad for me. My pace in the second race was good and that’s the positive I have to take to the next race weekend in Monza Italy. The rest of the weekend we have to forget,” said a disappointed Richard Verschoor.
