F3 championship points for Richard Verschoor on Circuit Paul Ricard

Richard Verschoor has scored his first points in the FIA Formula 3 Championship this weekend on Paul Ricard in France. During the second race of the weekend he crowned an absolute stunning race with fourth place overall. He was able to overtake ten of his opponents which created a very satisfying end to a race weekend which didn’t start that well. Verschoor scored a thirteenth place at the qualify and didn’t have the speed to fight for points during the first race on saturday. The TeamNL and MP Motorsport driver was very happy at the end of the second race because of the changes he made to the setup of the car payed off.

Verschoor had a very decent free practice but was surprised after the qualification. He didn’t change much to the setup of the car but he just did not had enough speed. “This wasn’t what we expected at all. All went well during free practice and I really enjoy this circuit. I just didn’t have the speed during qualification and I don’t know why. It surely felt fast but it wasn’t.”

The bad luck of Verschoor continued during the first race. After the start two cars in front of him went off and he had to get around them. “Once you are off track you have to go around the ‘bollards’. These things ensure you don’t take advantage of cutting the track. But you lose so much time and ground when you go off. I fell back to 23th position after that. I was able to fight back but I worn out my tyres to much and had to settle for 14th overall.”

After making some small changes to the setup of his car the luck returned to the young Verschoor. “We just made some small changes but in the end it were exactly the right changes. During the first race I oversteered a lot which cost me my tyres. I pushed a lot but the car just couldn’t handle that. During the second race I just could attack full force!”

In the beginning of the race Verschoor took it a little bit easy but during the second half of the race he regularly was the fastest driver on track. He missed the fastest lap by 0,009 seconds. “I deliberately took it easy during the first half of the race and I lost two places at the start. After that I was on fire! I closed a gap of three seconds within two laps and after that I was able to overtake one opponent after the other. I could overtake them on different locations on the track which was a lot of fun.”

The strong race resulted in a very solid 4th position overall. Verschoor scored his first F3 points of the season and he now travels to the next round in Austria full of confidence. “I am glad we race again next week. The break between the race in Barcelona and Paul Ricard was six weeks which is way to long for me. We have learned a lot this weekend and we take this experience with us to the next event on the Red Bull Ring in Austria. Of course the track is completely different from Paul Ricard it also has a lot of fast corners. I was always fast on the Red Bull Ring so I am looking forward to next weeks race!”
