After a very impressive second race Richard Verschoor managed to finish in the championship points of the GP3 Series for the fourth time in a row. In the last race of the season the 17 year old Dutchmen had to start from the fourteenth place. He was able to overtake several other drivers and finished in an impressive seventh place overall after a magnificent race.
Richard Verschoor: “I am very happy to end this race weekend on a high note. The first race on saturday wasn’t that successful so this is a great way to end the weekend and the season.”

The last race of the GP3 Series 2018 was driven on the beautiful Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. It was the fourth participation of KNAF Talent First and MP Motorsport driver Richard Verschoor in the highly competitive class which is considered as a big stepping stone to the Formula 1. After a descend qualification, in which Verschoor showed good pace, he had to settle for twelfth overall. Which was a setback for Verschoor.
Richard Verschoor: “Yas Marina Circuit was a completely new track for me and most of the other competitors have driven there before. Compared to the practise session the qualifying was already a big step forward. The gap between twelfth and seventh position was only 0.08 seconds so when I look at the times I should be satisfied with this time.”

The first race didn’t go as Verschoor has shown before this season. He just wasn’t able to attack and didn’t have enough pace to overtake other competitors. Instead he had to defend his twelfth position which he was able to do so for a couple of laps. A few laps before the end of the race has was overtaken by another competitor and Verschoor went off track shortly which cost him another place. Eventually he had to settle for fourteenth place overall in race one which was also his starting position for the second race.

Before the start of race two Verschoor made some adjustments to the settings of his car. That resulted in a much better pace and Verschoor was able to attack and show his talent again. After the start of race two he benefited from mistakes of drivers in front of him and he climbed to ninth overall in the first lap. In his hunt for a better result he managed to overtake two more drivers and finished seventh overall. He scored two championship points with that result and which he did in all the GP3 weekends he entered.

Richard Verschoor: “In the first race I just didn’t have the speed and wasn’t able to attack. After the race I consulted with my engineer and we changed some settings to the car and that did the trick. I was able to drive descend times similar to the times of the top drivers. I am pleased the changes we made worked very well and ofcourse I am very happy with the result in the final race. It’s really to end the weekend and the season in this way.”
